The trees are defending the fresh water well from all takers. The pirates need drinking water, more than they need loot. The guy stranded on the desert island may have gold, but he doesn't have a hook for fishing, nor does he have water to drink. The bird flying overhead has a fish, and will most likely not share with the stranded pirate.
